Christmas In August Dinner/Auction

Do pray you can join us for Christmas in August, we really have a great time… there are neat door prizes including a color TV (tradition)… and Roseline has brought back some really nice things from Haiti for the auction, Ruth Pojeky has done another beautiful picture… Bob will be there with his books and ready to autograph for the lucky bidder!

Food? Like last year Lynn and friends are preparing a table fit for Kings and Queens… something for everyone!

It is a fun evening and what better cause than to prepare for the children in Haiti celebrating Messiah’s birth with a party, gifts and a day to truly remember.

COULDN’T BELIEVE IT…

We moved the date up so that we would be away from the beginning of school and what do you know, they changed the opening of school and we are the night before once again… but we will have you home early, promise!

When: August 20, 2007 (Monday evening)
Time: 6:00 for social time, 6:30 to begin dinner
then the door prizes and auction
Where: First Presbyterian Church
455 Scotland St, Dunedin FL Click here for a map

NO NEWS…

Roseline began the paperwork a year ago in September to get Présumé a Visa to come to the US for Christmas in August, she has sent them all the money and forms they keep requesting, but as of this writing no news on the Visa.

The house is finished, but when I last heard from Roseline it was the day she was to fly home. They had taken her to the Milot hospital, coughing blood. It sounded like bronchitis. Prayers for Roseline, please. For those with e-mail addresses in my files, I will let you know when she makes it back to Florida.

Without the headquarters phone working and busy signals on both cell phones, I have no way of contacting them and they haven’t called me… no news is good news, right?

Anyway, no photos of the finished house yet, but it was completed shortly after she arrived down there, so should have photos when she comes in.

She will also be bringing more goodies for the auction and taking back with her the funds to start Pilgrim House #17. I had the privilege of speaking before the congregation of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, on my last trip north. What an enthusiastic group. They are so excited about being a part of providing homes for so many families.

Members of their congregation are also the ones who just donated the 3 pallets of food packets that are on their way to Haiti as we write you. So many blessings for the people of Haiti.

BAD NEWS

The bad news on this last trip to Indiana was that my sister took a tumble going to the 50th anniversary festivities at a church in Elwood. (and, no, I wasn’t there, was on my way back from Indianapolis?) There was an uneven sidewalk, she tripped and broke the upper arm of the same arm she broke the wrist of last November. However much to my disappointment she wouldn’t come back to Florida with me this time—and has since taken a second fall in the house—prayers for her, please, “Linda”

BACKGROUND FOR NEW…

Since this is one of those times without photos of truly current updates from Haiti, perhaps it is a good time to tell our new friends a little bit about For Haiti with Love and how long we have been around.

Don DeHart… was restless with the congregations he was pastoring, felt they were voting to use all their contributions and donations for their own creature comforts so on the sound advice of a fellow pastor, he left for Haiti to get his perspectives straight.

Using his words, he left a piece of his heart there, that was in the winter of 1968-69. For the rest of his time in Indiana, any spare money and sometimes money that wasn’t really spare went to help the needy of Northern Haiti. Don & Eva were married in 1973 and the “partnership” included a business service of bookkeeping and secretarial work, construction consulting… and Haiti.

Over the years, and especially after moving to Florida in 1981, anything the couple tried for themselves seem doomed while any venture for Haiti was glaringly successful—so they finally said, “okay God, service to Haiti it will be.” Pilot friend Mac recommended incorporating to get financial help for the dedication, he flew us down with supplies and …

For Haiti with Love came alive.
25 years old this summer!

The service began working out of the Hotel Imperial, later we rented a very old termite infested “green house” and later Mr. Beck invited us to headquarter on the property of the Hotel Beck. Many will recall when Mr. Beck decided to sell the property for $200,000. That was more than our annual budget at the time, but our contributors put that together in a little under two years and never skipped a beat on their regular monthly contributions to keep the program services going.

Once in our own facilities the scope of the work changed a little in that hurt people started coming to us and the trips out to the villages became less and less and the headquarters activities increased.

There were burned people seeking medical care. With Don’s training and volunteer doctors taking trips to Haiti, For Haiti with Love soon became the primary burn clinic for the north and to our knowledge the only facility providing care at no charge. We also handle all sorts of other medical emergencies.

There were hungry people with no sources of money or food so we started buying rice and beans in Haiti and handing it out, more and more came and now we ship containers of black bean splits, nutritionally balanced food packets and buy rice in Haiti because we haven’t been able to purchase and ship it for less than we can buy it there—for now.

Don’s love was building homes for a family with no home and dedicating it to the Lord and turning over the keys… over the years we have put well over 100 families into their own homes; the Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Indianapolis has been helping and this year we will complete “Pilgrim House #17.”

Other construction projects over the years included churches, schools, kitchens and dry storage areas for food for the schools, we had a school in Cap for many years, and built marketplaces in seven villages in the North of Haiti. Oh yes, and there is the “road to no-where” that goes up Beck Mountain to give the 300+ families up there and way to get down more quickly for market and medical care.

Over the years there have been hundreds of medical, dental and construction teams go down with us to volunteer their services and pay their own expenses—usually taking their project funding as well. The years of taking teams out into the mountains to stay for medical and dental services to the remote areas were great times to remember.

But now with Don’s passing on 4/15/2006 the baton has passed to the next generation. Roseline Saintilus came to Florida in 1993 for life saving surgeries on her back at Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, her mother was killed and we brought her to Florida to live with us. We adopted her, sent her through school, including her C.N.A. certification. She married in October of 2006 to Racine Présumé, a Haitian policeman. They are the Haiti team now with Roseline returning monthly for funding and supplies for the headquarters and clinic.

I still handle the Florida part of the mission program assuming the position of President in addition to the other tasks—put out the monthly newsletter, do the paperwork required by Uncle Sam, communicate with YOU, and generally serve as God’s beggar for His work.

YOU

Roseline can be here or in Haiti, I can be at my computer or on the telephone or in the garage helping with cargo, but the bottom line is NOTHING happens without you.

YOU, the contributors, provide the money that makes the wheels turn, the encouragement to keep us going, the prayers to give us the strength.

EVERYTHING TO GOD’S GLORY

We strive to maintain Don’s goal of serving at no charge, of not preaching, but demonstrating what the scriptures mean by what we DO. Sharing God’s unconditional love with the hurting and hungry.
